Toilet Care

Toilet Care? That's right, folks. When you think about it, your toilet is really your best friend. You could never ask anyone else to do what you ask your toilet to do! So, what can you do to show your appreciation for your toilet's noble service?

First, you can keep it clean, please. There are two approaches to toilet cleaning - cleaning for appearance, and cleaning for health, which is the higher level of cleaning you want for your toilet.

Before you begin to clean a toilet, gather all needed materials, including personal protection equipment such as gloves and eyewear.

Using a disinfectant detergent cleaner, mixed either in a spray bottle or in a bucket according to label instructions, spray or wipe down all the hard surfaces outside the bowl. Pay close attention to high touch areas like the toilet seat and flush handle. In order to disinfect these surfaces, the surface must remain wet for ten minutes unless the label instructions state otherwise.

After the outside surfaces are wet, lower the waterline in the toilet bowl. Unlike what we see in television commercials, where toilet bowls are cleaned while full of water, true disinfectant results are only obtained when the bowl is cleaned without water in it. This can be achieved in one of several ways:

1. Push a bowl swab in and out of the trap quickly until the water level drops  into the trap.
2. Quickly pour about 1.5 gallons of water into the bowl.
3. Turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush.
4. Use a toilet plunger and force the water down and out of the trap.

After the water level has dropped, spray the inside surfaces of the toilet bowl. Again, to completely disinfect the toilet, the surface must remain wet for 10 minutes unless stated otherwise on the label. Use a bowl swab to clean under the rim and work down into the trap. After the appropriate time, flush the toilet and wipe down the outside surfaces including the toilet seat and handle.

Another favor you can do for your toilet is to periodically clean out the flush passages, which are the tiny holes under the rim that shoot water into the bowl when it is flushed. These holes sometimes become clogged with minerals and grime, so to restore full flow, poke each hole clean with a short length of wire or pipe cleaner.
